The Fundação Cidade de Lisboa invites you to attend the upcoming conference “Prehistoric Lisbon: from its origins to the 9th century BC”, featuring a special appearance by Professor João Luís Cardoso.
The event will take place on 27 May 2026 at 6 pm at the Fundação Cidade de Lisboa, located at Campo Grande, 380. Admission is free, but prior registration is required.
Synopsis
The first part of the conference will present a summary of the main findings obtained since the late 19th century regarding the successive prehistoric human settlements recorded in the city of Lisbon and the respective stakeholders.
The second part will present the most important archaeological sites identified to date beneath Lisbon, as a result of excavations carried out as part of the city’s urban redevelopment, particularly from the Early Neolithic, Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. From the Early Neolithic, the Sommer Warehouses (Santa Apolónia), the Ludovice Palace (Bairro Alto) and the Encosta de Sant’Ana (Martim Moniz) will be discussed; from the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic, the Travessa das Dores / Rio Seco complex (Boa-Hora/Junqueira) will be presented. The speaker has first-hand knowledge of all these sites, having had the opportunity to contribute to their study, publication and dissemination.
